A hugely popular game with rightly deserved pros and cons

Rip-roaring good fun makes Fortnite understandably popular

If you pay any attention to the internet or the news you’re likely to have heard of Fortnite, Epic Games’ sorta-survival-shooter that’s captivating kids, frustrating parents, and making a whole lot of money in the meantime. Unlike other kid-popular games (we’re looking at you, Roblox), Fortnite is actually a lot of fun to play. It looks good, works pretty well, and offers a lot of bright, funny, and fast-paced action.

In its simplest manifestation, Fortnite is free to download and play. You’ll have to sign up for an account and download the installer, which is actually an Epic Games hub that would allow you to download a variety of games, among them Fortnite. Once you’ve found the game in question, you can download it, but be warned it’s big and despite a good internet connection, ours was pretty darn slow.
Once you’ve managed to get Fortnite on your computer, you’ll have to decide between 3 game modesSave The World, Battle Royale, or Creative. The first is a cooperative survival game, the second is an old-school shoot (mostly) everything that moves, and the last is a sandbox game where you can skip around and build things. Anything particularly cool that springs from Creative mode can end up being included in the main online game.
The game mechanics have a learning curve, but it’s not too steep and after a few semi-blind fumbles (and eliminations), you should get to grips with it pretty quickly. Battle Royale is by far the most popular mode, while at the moment, Save the World is still in beta and requires a purchase to play. The other two modes are free, but there is (of course) an in-game currency, V-Bucks, that can be bought or earned and exchanged for various accessories and improvements.
Fortnite can be played online with strangers or in groups of friends of your choosing. If you want to play with friends, you’ll have to invite them and set your privacy settings to public, friends, or solo, as appropriate. The game also offers parental controls and a selection of other settings that can be changed to improve your game experience. There is also in-game chat and text, which is something you may want to enable or disable, depending on who is playing.

Where can you run this program?

Fortnite is available on Windows, iOS, Android, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch. This version is for Windows.

Is there a better alternative?

Sure, there are better computer games out there, but if you want to play Fortnite, then you want to play Fortnite!

Our take

Fortnite is a slick and enjoyable trio of games for Windows and pretty much every other platform you can get a game on. It has a bad reputation, primarily for gun violence and addiction problems. It’s worth pointing out that any game or even screen time can be addictive, so although it might be a problem that comes to light with Fortnite, it’s certainly not a problem caused specifically by the game. Fortnite does indeed represent gun (and other violence) but it’s also worth bearing in mind that it has a PEGI rating of 12, which should be respected. Beyond that, you’re going to have to use your own judgement to decide if it’s suitable, but safety concerns aside, Fortnite is rollicking good fun and it’s easy to see why it has grown so popular in such a short amount of time.
